Welcoming 34 students from 10 countries and 15 US states, the program blended lectures, interactive tutorials, peer-to-peer learning, and collaborative team projects to provide a deep dive into the principles, products, applications of ocean state estimation. Taught by leading experts, the course advanced participants’ understanding of ocean and climate science. There were also presentations from local residents. This included a delegation from the town of Carmel-by-the-Sea who discussed how their coastal infrastructure is being threatened by sea level rise and Dr. Peter Chu (Naval Postgraduate School) who discussed importance of physical oceanography for the US Navy.
