Abstract

SWOT, launched in December 2022, offers two-dimensional sea surface height data at sub-10km wavelength resolution. In this study, we initiate spectral kinetic energy cascade analysis using SWOT data, which is combined with AVISO products and numerical simulations, using our approach established by Arbic et al. (2013, JPO). Specifically, we aim to determine whether the combination of SWOT and AVISO data replicates the deeper spectral troughs, representing an inverse cascade, observed in the analysis using unfiltered model output. Additionally, we investigate whether the spectral fluxes computed from SWOT and AVISO align more closely with results from MITgcm LLC simulations conducted at JPL or HYCOM simulations run at NRL. This comprehensive analysis serves to quantify which of these high-resolution simulation models captures nonlinear energy transfers more accurately and will be useful for a broader ocean simulation community.
